Critical Care Paramedics – Specialty Care / Emergency Medical Transportation
At Tri-Hospital EMS we have taken a different approach to the way we handle transporting critically ill or injured patients. Our Specialty Care Paramedics have 80 additional hours of specialty care training. The enhanced training was obtained by using Doctors, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists and Pharmacists to assist with the training. All of these professionals were able to provide hands on training with equipment and medications that our Paramedics do not typically come in contact with including but not limited to: chest tubes, Swanz Ganz Catheters, medication infusion equipment, arterial lines, thrombolytics, vasopressors, sedatives, paralytics and antibiotics. This is just a snap shot of what the training included.

This specialized training, in conjunction with state of the art equipment purchased and placed on board all SCT vehicles, enables the Paramedics to better respond and treat any complications that may arise during a transfer of a critically injured or ill patient.

Our SCT Paramedics serve 3 area hospitals and are able to transport the vast majority of the patients that need to seek a higher level of care that may not be available in the St. Clair County area, including but not limited to: Acute Myocardial Infarctions, High-Risk OB patients, Pediatric and Neo-Natal patients and Trauma patients.

In addition to the SCT training that our Paramedics attend, they must also maintain certifications in PHTLS (Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support), NALS (Neo-Natal Advanced Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), or PEPP (Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals). They also have to maintain their SCT certification by obtaining an additional 20 credit hours within a 3 year period in addition to maintaining their Michigan Paramedic License by obtaining 45 credit hours in a 3 year period.

Our Dispatch personnel will assist the hospital personnel in determining the mode of transportation for a patient (ALS or SCT) based on the medications infusing and or additional equipment the patient may require.
