EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

Q: What is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

A: An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a healthcare professional trained to provide emergency medical care and transportation for patients experiencing illness or injury. EMTs are often the first to arrive at the scene of an emergency and are skilled in patient assessment, CPR, airway management, administering oxygen, and handling trauma and medical emergencies. They play a vital role in stabilizing patients and ensuring safe transport to hospitals for further care. To work on an ambulance and transport patients, this is the minimum level of licensure required in the state of Michigan.

Q: What kind of situations do Emergency Medical Technicians typically handle?

A: EMTs respond to a wide range of emergencies, including medical issues such as heart attacks, strokes, seizures, respiratory distress, and allergic reactions, as well as traumatic events like car accidents, falls, burns, and bleeding. Their training enables them to provide immediate care, stabilize patients, and communicate with hospitals to prepare for advanced treatment upon arrival.

Q: How do I become an Emergency Medical Technician?

A: To become an EMT, you must complete a certified Emergency Medical Technician training course. Tri-Hospital EMS offers this course several times per year with two varying tracks (Traditional and Accelerated), covering essential topics such as patient assessment, emergency care techniques, airway management, and trauma response. After finishing the course, you will need to pass a written and practical exam to earn your certification.
